Johnson Museum — Making Wood Block Print

Another activity Mimi attended was woodblock printing.  The museum sometimes host pretty good quality workshops that combine the demonstration and hands-on activities.  This is one example of these workshops.  They tuned it down quite a bit to meet the skill sets of the younger audience.

A local artist was explaining the process of making the woodblock print.

Some of the very fine print was actually done by laser printer.

Before putting the color on the board, you need to apply one layer of oil to keep the moisture.

Apply force evenly on paper so that the link can be transform on to the paper.

After the demonstration, participants can make their own woodblock print.  Instead of using wood board, they use foam that can be manipulated easily.

Most of the people have pretty simple design.  Mimi wanted to make a flower with pedals.  That is fairly complicated one that requires lots of time and attention to details..

Mimi also used my keys to carve the shadow in the middle of the flower.

She decided to make two different colors on the same pattern.

This is her print.
