Mimi’s Field Trip — Musical Production “Immigration” in Elmira
On Monday, Mimi took a school field trip to Elmira to see a musical performance on Ellis Island. This is not Mimi’s first experience to see a theater production, but this is the first time she goes to a theater in a school setting. According to Mrs. Patterson, it was a pretty magnificent theater. They viewed a short musical about immigrant experience that was related directly to what they studied in last semester.
This is what Mrs. Patterson said about the field trip (in an email to all parents):
“The experience was “priceless”. Most of the students were awed by theater itself, with the plush seats, the gold leaf decor and the box seats. The mural on the ceiling was the subject of a lot of discussion.
They returned to school to find an incredible spread of food — pizza, fruit, drinks and beautiful desserts. We allowed students to eat with their 5th grade friends, in either classroom, and to socialize a bit. It was one of the best days ever!!”
Of course, mommy asked Mimi how she felt about the play. Mimi talked a lot about what she saw in the performane — people with different accents coming through immigration gates, tough situation they experienced (last name being changed only because the immigration officer couldn’t understand his/her accent, etc).
She also told mommy that she had so many slices of pepperoni pizza and desserts. When mommy asked if she had any vegetable or fruit for lunch, this little girl remained silent……
I guess this was a great day for Mimi.
Thought i want to write this up in case mimi forgets — there was at least one day she really enjoyed at school……
(p.s. mommy later found out that there was no homework for the day. Mimi said “we didn’t learn anything so we don’t have to do homework!!”)
