Mimi’s First NYSSMA Festival — A Perfect Score (including NEW video upload)

On May 14, Saturday, mommy took Mimi to attend her first NYSSMA assessment (after Animal Cracker event).  NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) hosts their annual evaluation festival.  The evaluation takes place in two parts — solo evaluation and basic proficiency evaluation.

Children will bring a piece of their music to perform in front of a judge for a score (from 0-28).  They are scored based on the tone, technique, accuracy and their interpretation to the music of their choice.  In addition to that, they will also be asked to play a scale randomly selected by the judge.

Each student will arrive at their assigned time to the assigned room.  This is Mimi’s first time.  Even though her buddy, Hannah, was there to give her spiritual support, she was still quite nervous.

Mimi took a quite break to practice before her solo.  See below for the recording.

Can you see the nervousness on her face?  It’s hard to get through the waiting time….

Only friends/family and their teacher are allowed to enter the room.  No photography, no video recording in any shapes and forms.  It’s against the state rule and the score will be over-turned if parents violate this.

Mimi was watching her friend who was in a turn before her.

Mimi did an excellent job at the solo.  Her piece was very smooth and she carried her high tune very well.

She received the perfect score from the judge.  After comparing notes with other friends, she found that the judge was quite generous with the scoring.  Many of her friends also received the perfect score.  Great job!!
