Blyde River Canyon
One of the projects that Jordan has is to research a landform. Jordan needs to pick a landform she is interested in for her research. She has a choice to either do a poster or a travel booklet. After talking to Jordan, she decides to do a poster.
Mommy and Jordan talked about the layout of her poster. Mimi has some ideas on what she wanted but she needed help to present her information. She picked Blyde River Canyon in Repubic of South African as the subject of her poster.
Personally, I don’t think this is an easy project. This involves independent research, processing and integrating information and presentation in its final stage. Although this is a great exercise for children to be able to conduct a small independent study, this still requires quite a bit of parental involvement.
Jordan first trace the continent of Africa map. She did a really good job capturing all the details. She said “it felt like traveling to Africa myself!!”
Then she and mommy were brainstorming to come up with top 10 questions people will want to know about this particular landform. Mimi will need to go on-line to do the research to answer these questions. Then she will need to use her own words to transfer those trivia questions onto her poster.
Sounds easy? Well, the map along took her the whole Saturday morning to trace. Let along the time she needs to do her research. The project took her about a day and half to complete.
She is spreading herself around the living room floor.
This is her final work — I think it looks pretty good, at least for a 6th grader.
A close up look of the map.
The followings were the questions she researched online.
Hope you learned something as well….
