Mimi’s Letter of Recommendation

This summer, Mimi helped Wendy, a school teacher from New Visions Health Science Program at Ithaca School District to work on some small projects.  Wendy told Jordan that she will write a letter of recommendation for Jordan.

Mommy received the letter this weekend and saw what Wendy had in her letter.  She can’t help but to share that here in the blog…….

September 25, 2012

It is my pleasure to write on behalf of Jordan Lu, a middle school student who served as a summer volunteer for the New Visions Health Sciences Program in July and August of 2012.  New Visions is a September through June career exploration program at Cayuga Medical Center for high school students who aspire to health and medical careers.

I first met Jordan in May, when she began looking for a summer service opportunity.  I was looking for a volunteer who could help me during the summer to prepare teaching materials and do a mix of clerical and organizational tasks in my classroom at the hospital.  When I interviewed her, I was impressed with her eagerness and her skill set and we agreed to give it a try.  I was not disappointed!

Jordan was prompt, reliable and arrived ready and willing to tackle anything that was asked for her.  Her hours were 9am to 3pm on the days she worked for me.  Some of her duties included: installing new software and computer peripherals; making class sets of print and multimedia teaching materials; processing shipments of newly purchased books; assisting me in cleaning out and organizing my teaching files; creating and decorating storage containers for videos and books; helping me develop a schedule of clinical rotations for my incoming students; and locating web sites and downloading online documents from a list provided to her.  She completed all of these assignment with care and precision.

In addition to being so helpful, Jordan was a delight to work alongside.  I often joked with her that an added benefit to having her working at New Visions was that she kept me on task.  I certain was more productive myself on the days she was here.

I feel very fortunate that Jordan offered her services as a volunteer to the New Visions program this summer.  Although she did not receive a salary, this was her first real job, and she exceed all expectations I might have had for a middle school student.  Her efforts really came to fruition when school began in September, and I was able to concentrate on teaching my new students right from start without also scrambling to accomplish the myriad organizational tasks that she took care of for me.  I have really told Jordan that I would welcome her back to New Visions any time.  As she continues to grow and gain experience, she will be an asset to anyone who hires her in the future.

Thank you, Wendy, for the opportunity.  Jordan shined because of you.
