Primitive Pursuit Open House

Primitive Pursuit is an educational program focuses on building outdoor survival skills.  Mimi attended their afterschool program for about two months.  I am not sure why but every time Mimi complianted about going.  However, she ended up having a good time almost every time.

A few weeks ago, they hosted their annual open house on a Saturday afternoon.  Of course, I will like to check it out.  After picking her up from gymnastic, I asked her:

“Do you want to go check out the Primitive Open House”,

“No, I am not interested”, she said

“Do you want to try for 5 minutes?  If you don’t like it, we will leave right away”, I said.

“Well, maybe for 5 minutes”

The 5 minutes became two hours.

The event was held in 4H Camp Ground.  There were several hands-on activities for children.  We learned how to cook a whole fish in the wild.  They gutted the fish first.  The internal organs were removed in front of you (and Mimi found that the heart was still beating).  They then wrapped the cleaned fish in a big green leave (and need to make sure the plant is not poisonous).  After that, they wrapped the package with clay and put that into fire to bake for 20 minutes.  See http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=419222&id=140669795283&ref=mf for pictures from the program.

Mimi tasted the fish and told me it was better than the one I make (with seasoning and spices).

In addition to that, Mimi also made a necklace.  What’s so special about that necklace is that she made the string with grass.  Like what you see in a small village in Africa, she took strings of grass and to rub them into a bigger one.  Then she took a few to braid them into a string.  The rock was one small piece of flat mineral found in the wild.  She used a tool to drill a hole (and it took about almost half an hour) so she can make the necklace.

She also used the tree barks to make a small purse.  It has to be done when it is still fresh so you can make into a shape.  Unfortunately, we didn’t keep the finished product.
